By strengthening your supporting muscles around that certain joint, you're able to provide support and stability around the joint itself. This alone can provide support and strength, range of motion, and lubrication to the joint.
The last thing you want to be doing is adding weight or resistance to joints in pain, which is why body weight exercises are important. Something as little as wall sits, reverse lunges, or step ups can be very beneficial in stabilizing muscles around your joints.
